Your destination and holiday resort
on the Baltic Sea and Bodden coast

Born a. Darß is situated in the former district of Nord-Vorpommern. However, since the last district reorganisation, Born has been part of the current district of Vorpommern-Rügen. Consequently, NVP or VR number plates on cars both indicate this area. On the Baltic Sea coast, the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula is one of the most popular holiday destinations in northern Germany. This is where you will find Born.

Born has retained its authenticity and natural charm to this day – qualities that are frequently sought after but increasingly rare. This has been helped by the local council and the village’s protected status as part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. The establishment of this national park stems from a final decision by the former GDR government and has proved to be a blessing for large parts of the region.

Born’s charm is characterised by thatched, well-maintained houses set against a maritime backdrop. Alongside the Bodden waters with their small, sometimes seemingly forgotten harbours, the lush Darß primeval forest is a delightful surprise. On a cycle ride to Darßer Ort at the northern tip of the peninsula, it will be your constant companion. The next highlight is the vast expanse of the Baltic Sea. You’ll be left with a sense of variety and closeness to nature. Ultimately, that is what defines and sets this area apart.

The Peterssonshof

The Petersson Farmstead, home to the ‘Petersson Captain’s House’, is situated right in the centre of Born. As we know from local accounts, it was first mentioned in the 17th century as the heart of the village. At that time, this spot, with its lime trees, was used by the locals for social gatherings and to exchange the latest news. One of these old trees still stands today in our ‘Lindengarten’ (Linden Garden), though it was split in two by a lightning strike on 13 June 2020.

The name “Peterssons Hof” can be traced back to the Swedish ancestors of the “von Petersson” family. Following the end of Schill’s struggles for freedom (18th century), they settled near Zingst and mainly on the Darß peninsula. This family produced many famous captains and sailors who sailed the world’s oceans in their ships.

Carl von Petersson, born in 1833, who later also became a famous ship’s captain and commanded the barque ‘Ceres’ in the 1850s and 1860s, is regarded as one of the principal builders of Petersson’s Hof. He erected the stately residence and several outbuildings on the 3,500 m² site. Together with his son Rudolf, he embarked on what was, by the standards of the time, a daring venture and opened one of the first hotels on the Darß peninsula in 1888: ‘Petersson’s Hotel’. The hotel also housed a general store in the basement and a dance hall on the upper floor.
